I have just come into ownership of a new banjo uke and wondered whether anyone could help me figure out what it is from my description.
I may be able to post a photo when I get it all back in one piece, but here goes:
It looks very much like a Dallas B with the metal plate round the resonator, it does not have the button on the rear od the resonator, there are the same number of hooks as a Dallas B - 8. It is a reddish colour. The tuners are a bit crap but are white/cream in colour but consist of a knob, screw, spindle and 2 washers through a rather small hole.
The neck is held on by 2 screws into the bowl and there is no adjustment but it looks OK. There is a 4 figure serial number at the bottom of the fretboard and inside the resonator, which is held on by 4 screws through the metal plate, unlike the Dallas which are usually on the top rear of peg hear with the model letter and a slash and a number.
The last thing is it has a George Formby signature pressed or engraved into the top of the peghead, gold in colour, unlike the Dallas that has a metal plate.
Anyone any ideas as make model, how old etc.
The only reason it is stripped down was to give it a good clean and polish as it looked like a spider had made its home inside although the wood and laquer looks good. It has a case that looks almost brand new. There is a photo postcard in the case of a chap called Sam Bass (looks a bit like Alfie Bass) and his Dallas Ukulele, who was aparently chosen to portray and pay tribute to George Formby in
TV programmes for ITV, BBC and CBS in the USA from 1963 to 1967. He lived in Newcastle-U-Lyme.
